In recent years there have been numerous high-profile cases of medical negligence at Spire Healthcare hospitals, including Spire Parkway and Spire Little Aston in the West Midlands, and Spire Leeds in West Yorkshire.

Many of these cases involved patients being misdiagnosed and put through unnecessary surgeries.

At Thompsons Solicitors, we have successfully represented many former Spire patients who have suffered medical negligence. We have helped patients who accessed treatment privately, as well as patients treated at Spire via the NHS, to secure compensation for their negligent treatment.

If you believe you have suffered medical negligence at Spire Healthcare, we can help. Our medical negligence lawyers can offer free, no-obligation legal advice and tell you if you have a claim. With Thompsons, you can make a medical negligence claim on a no win, no fee basis, and you’ll always keep at least 75% of your compensation.

Examples of medical negligence at Spire Hospitals

There are several surgeons who worked at Spire who have been accused of doctor negligence.

A photo of jailed surgeon Ian Paterson who operated at Spire hospitals

Ian Paterson

Former breast surgeon Ian Paterson was criminally convicted of multiple counts of wounding with intent in April 2017 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Paterson had been performing unnecessary surgical procedures and operations on patients referred to him by Spire Healthcare. Paterson performed invasive lumpectomies when biopsies would suffice, cleavage sparing mastectomies – a procedure not recognised by clinical practice – and even performed mastectomies on women who did not have cancer.

Paterson operated out Spire Parkway and Spire Little Aston, in addition to NHS hospitals in Birmingham and across the West Midlands. We helped over 500 of his victims make surgical negligence and misdiagnosis claims, securing compensation for their horrendous ordeals.

Habib Rahman

Over 200 patients treated by Habib Rahman at Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull were recalled in 2020 over fears the orthopaedic surgeon carried out unnecessary procedures on them.

An independent review conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons was commissioned by Spire to examine Mr Rahman's practice. It resulted in a recommended review of patients who received shoulder manipulation surgery from Mr Rahman.

We are supporting a number of Rahman’s clients with their orthopaedic negligence claims.

Michael Walsh

Consultant Michael Walsh was suspended from practice in April 2018 and subsequently sacked by Spire. He was reported to the General Medical Council (GMC) after it was found that several colleagues and patients had made complaints about his work, in relation to carrying out unnecessary medical procedures. Walsh has since retired and is no longer licensed to practise as a doctor.

We represented patients of Walsh who suffered as a result of unnecessary surgeries performed at Spire Leeds.

Mian Munawar Shah

Mr Shah is an orthopaedic surgeon who worked for Spire Little Aston as well as working for the NHS at Walsall Manor Hospital.

He’s currently suspended by Walsall Healthcare Trust following multiple medical negligence claims made against him, with around 600 of his former patients being recalled by Walsall Manor Hospital.

Spire Healthcare patients we have represented

At Thompsons Solicitors, we have represented and continue to represent over 800 people who experienced clinical negligence at Spire Healthcare hospitals. Here are just a few of our valued clients.

A photo of Cheryl Iommi, our medical negligence client who was operated on by Ian Paterson

Cheryl Iommi

Cheryl Iommi, from King’s Norton in Birmingham, was left with both physical and mental scars by three unnecessary lumpectomies carried out by rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson at a Spire hospital. Paterson had wrongly told Cheryl that she required the surgery as she was going to get breast cancer. We helped Cheryl secure compensation for her ordeal.

A photo of Judith Eva, our clinical negligence client who was operated on by Ian Paterson

Judith Eva

Retired teacher, Judith Eva, from Knowle, also suffered from unnecessary lumpectomies performed by Ian Paterson, who described a lump in Judith’s breast as ‘sinister’. When the truth about Paterson came out, Judith was recalled and told that the lumps in her breast were in fact cysts, so the surgery had been completely unnecessary. We represented Judith and helped her secure compensation.

Carly Duffy

We secured compensation for Carly Duffy, a paramedic from Wakefield, after now-retired orthopaedic surgeon Michael Walsh performed shoulder surgery on her that left her suffering with intense pain. The surgery took place at the Spire hospital in Leeds.

Habib Rahman Client

We are currently representing a woman from the West Midlands who was recalled by Spire Healthcare and told she had undergone two unnecessary shoulder operations in the space of two months. She had been operated on by Habib Rahman at Spire Parkway. Our medical negligence lawyers are working to secure the maximum compensation possible.
