Roles at Thompsons

Most of our work is in personal injury, employment and criminal and professional misconduct law. These are exciting opportunities for dynamic, enthusiastic and innovative lawyers. You must be sensitive to the needs of our clients and have empathy with the trade union movement. An ability to make decisions, work with minimum supervision and exercise judgement are essential as is self-motivation and confidence. For most posts we would require a solicitor with between one and two years’ PQE or a legal executive/assistant with two or more years’ experience, within the appropriate specialism. We do have senior roles, which would require considerably more legal and management experience.

There are a range of jobs that fall into this category. In the main, you would be assisting our various specialist teams in day-to-day activities, which might include taking witness statements, preparation of special damage calculations, attending case conferences and court hearings etc. In some positions, you would be allocated a number of cases under the supervision of a senior member of staff.

Excellent communication skills, computer literacy and good keyboard skills are essential. Legal experience is often an advantage and in some posts a law degree, or similar, as well as previous experience would be required.

Litigation experience is essential, together with good organisational and communication skills, and experience of using Microsoft Word. Fast and accurate typing skills are also required, as is experience of audio typing. You must be a team player and able to work with minimum supervision to meet deadlines in a busy and fast moving environment.

We have managers who head up our Finance, IT and HR functions. In addition, we have office administrators who do not undertake legal work but support the smooth running of offices by providing a professional service and dealing with admin, personnel and accounting matters. For all posts at this level, we would require education to degree level or equivalent and significant experience in a particular specialism and/or people management.

We also have a range of posts within the support functions of HR, Finance, Payroll and IT. In addition, each office will have general administration, post room and receptionist roles. Some posts are more specialised, such as accountant or IT Developer. The person specification will be dependent upon the role, though like all our other posts we want commitment, enthusiasm and real team players. For professional level posts we would ask for an appropriate qualification and experience.

We have a network of offices across the country and each office is responsible for any work placements available. You can find details of our office locations here. Please make direct contact with the office(s) in which you would be interested in undertaking a placement.

Thompsons’ commitments, awards and accreditations

We’re proud to have been recognised and rewarded as a law firm and employer by some of the leading industry organisations.

Mansfield Rule accreditation

We are delighted to be participating in and working towards the Diversity Lab’s Mansfield Rule certification over the next year.

The Mansfield Rule originated in the US and is named after Arabella Mansfield, who was the first woman admitted to practice law in the USA. Running for the first time in the UK this year, following a successful pilot in 2021, the Mansfield Rule aims to increase the number of female, BAME, disabled and LGBTQ+ lawyers (who have been historically underrepresented) in leadership roles in law firms.

To achieve accreditation, the firm must commit to at least 30% of underrepresented lawyers being considered for a variety of both internal and external roles.

At Thompsons Solicitors, we believe in the beauty and strength of diversity. We are proud to announce our commitment to the Halo Code. This pioneering campaign champions the right of every individual to embrace their natural hair and hairstyles in the workplace. Learn more about the Halo Code and our pledge to employees and clients.
