At Thompsons, we have been involved in asbestos litigation for over 40 years - longer than any other law firm in the UK. We brought the first successful asbestos compensation case to the House of Lords back in 1972, and we've been involved in every significant case around the law of asbestos compensation ever since.

During that time, our experts have collected unrivalled records regarding asbestos exposure. Thompsons now holds the UK's largest asbestos register containing details about the exposure of thousands of individuals across the UK.

We have access to expert reports, historical records of asbestos in local areas, and information about which companies used asbestos and when. The register gives us a unique insight into common sources of asbestos exposure and provides a database of potential witnesses to support your claim.

Our extensive records also include lists of employers’ insurers, even for employers that have long since ceased trading.

Frequently asked questions about asbestosis claims

Asbestosis is a lung disease commonly caused by excessive and prolonged periods of asbestos exposure.

Breathing in asbestos fibres causes scarring and thickening of lung tissues, which in turn causes the lungs to lose elasticity and their ability to function properly. The main symptom of asbestosis is shortness of breath, however other symptoms include chest pain, tightness around the chest and an unexplained cough.

If you think you may be suffering with asbestosis, you should seek advice from your GP who can refer you for an X-ray, scan or biopsy to help diagnose the condition. Oxygen therapy can help relieve the symptoms of asbestosis, however the condition cannot be cured.

Anyone who has been suffering from asbestosis within the last three years can make a claim for asbestosis compensation.

This is because there is a time limit of three years in which you are able to start a claim. This time limit starts from the date of diagnosis, not from the time you were exposed to asbestos, which could be decades ago.

Call our asbestosis solicitors today for more information on how to make a claim and get compensation.

People who are likely to be at risk of asbestosis are typically those who were exposed to asbestos in their workplace. People with jobs such as boilermakers, electricians, fitters, shipbuilders, carpenters and joiners are more likely to have been exposed to asbestos.

Family members of those working in these industries can also be affected after being exposed to asbestos dust brought home on their work clothes.

Asbestos was widely used in a variety of building materials and products from the 1930s until it was banned in the 1980s. This means almost all buildings constructed or refurbished during this period are likely to contain the substance. People who spent any time in or near such buildings could therefore have been exposed to asbestos.

It doesn’t matter where you were exposed to asbestos, we can still help you to make an asbestosis claim.

Our asbestosis solicitors won’t charge you for their services when you make an asbestosis claim.

The only charge you will have to pay is for an insurance policy to underwrite your claim. We have to pass this charge on to you by law, but you will only pay it if your claim is successful. If you do not win your claim, you won’t have to pay for the insurance.

This is the same principle as a no win, no fee arrangement, except with an asbestosis claim you won’t be charged for our legal advice and representation at any time, only insurance. Speak to our lawyers for a better idea of what the insurance cost may be.

If you are part of a trade union, it’s worth making a claim through your union’s legal service. Union members receive 100% of the compensation secured, with no deductions for insurance.

The amount of compensation we can secure for your asbestosis legal claim depends on a number of factors. Each case is calculated by looking at the level of pain or suffering, any disability it has caused, as well as financial losses and care costs incurred.

Generally, the greater the impact your disease has had on your health, your finances and your quality of life, the greater the amount of compensation we can secure for you.

We can give you an idea of how much compensation you may be able to receive when we have information about how you have been affected by asbestosis. Request a call back and we’ll be in touch to discuss your situation and provide an estimate of potential compensation.

Here are some examples of asbestosis payouts we have secured for our clients:

  • £168,000 for the estate of a man from the West Midlands who was exposed to asbestos while working as a joiner.
  • £90,000 for a 90-year-old man from Great Yarmouth, who was employed by the CEGB as an engineer at two local power stations. The payout has helped fund the costs of his home help.
  • £66,549 for the family of a man from North Shields who passed away from his condition. He was exposed to asbestos while working at a power station.

If you have been suffering with asbestosis, contact Thompsons Solicitors today to begin your claim. Call us on 0800 0 224 224, complete our online claim form or request a call back.

A member of our team will get back to you within 24 hours to discuss your case and let you know if we think you can make a successful claim for compensation.

If you want to progress your claim, we’ll work with you to build a case and fight for you to receive the maximum compensation possible.
