Who is John Williamson?
John Bradley Williamson is a spinal surgeon who worked at Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Spire Manchester Hospital. He is a former president of the British Scoliosis Society, examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and was chair of the neurosciences division at the Salford Royal Hospital.
The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust sacked Williamson in 2015 and he has not carried out surgery at Spire since 2013.
What is John Williamson accused of?
A report, commissioned by The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, has alleged that Williamson had poor surgical technique, record-keeping and communication with patients.
Some patients have reported experiencing excessive blood loss, long-term pain and mobility issues.
In a high number of cases examined in the report, there were issues with screw placement and in some cases, poorly planned surgery and lack of patient consent.
What are the NHS and Spire doing about patient concerns?
Spire says it has contacted all patients whose care is to be reviewed and have been given details of how their care with Mr Williamson will be assessed.
Dr Rafik Bedair, Northern Care Alliance Chief Medical Officer, said all those whose care or treatment was under review had been contacted.
However, as it stands, there has been no full patient recall and, therefore, Thompsons Solicitors believes there will be more people who have suffered as a result of Mr Williamson’s negligence and urges them to come forward for legal support.
What should I do if I’ve been treated by John Williamson?
If you are contacted by the NHS or Spire you should respond and go for any re-examination that they suggest.
If you have not received communication but have been treated by Mr Williamson and are in pain or have not recovered as you expected, you should make contact with your GP as soon as possible.
If you think that Mr Williamson’s treatment may have caused you extra pain and suffering you may be able to make a claim for medical negligence.
