Knocked down by a car
A woman who suffered horrendous multiple injuries after she was knocked down by a car when it mounted the kerb while she was walking to church has received compensation with help from Thompsons Solicitors.
The 76-year-old from North London was walking along a road in Enfield on the way to church in May 2010 when the car mounted the kerb and hit her.
She was rushed to intensive care suffering multiple injuries including a broken neck, fractures to her spine, ribs, pelvis and right ankle. She also suffered damage to her liver, kidney and spleen.
She needed a tracheotomy which led to a narrowing of the windpipe which required reconstruction surgery more than a year after the accident. The operation meant she was fed through a tube for a year.
The operation has left her with a hoarse voice and she is undergoing speech therapy.
As a result of the accident she suffered from agoraphobia and was unable to leave her house. Fortunately her condition is improving.
Car driver was driving too fast and lost control of the vehicle
Following the accident the pensioner and her husband contacted Thompsons Solicitors for advice. Thompsons argued the car driver was driving too fast and had lost control of the vehicle.
The driver’s insurers settled a claim for compensation out of court for £180,000. The driver was also convicted for dangerous driving.
Her husband said: “This was a shocking accident which happened as we were minding our own business walking to church. The last thing we expected was for a car to mount the payment and hit my wife. She has been through a horrendous time with her injuries but has been extremely brave and has made a good recovery.
“She will never be 100% and there is still damage to her vocal chords but we feel fortunate that she survived the crash.”
Christalla Christodoulidou from Thompsons Solicitors said: “Our client has been through an atrocious two years since this accident which could have been avoided had the car driver taken more care and consideration over his driving.
“Our client has shown determination and resilience in the way she has dealt with her extensive injuries which have left a once independent woman reliant on more care and support from her husband. We hope this compensation can be some sort of justice for the couple as well as provide them with financial support during her recovery.”
