A banned driver, who tried to cover up his involvement in a fatal accident, has been jailed for six years
A banned driver, who caused the death of a 16-year-old girl and then tried to cover up his involvement, has been jailed for six years for causing death by careless driving.
Jade Clark, a 16-year-old girl from Hampshire, was killed in a collision with Brian Hampton in February of this year.
The court was told how Jade’s moped was, "swallowed up and pushed along the carriageway" in the crash, before Hampton drove around her, leaving her exposed to fast moving, oncoming traffic. It was then that Jade was hit by another vehicle causing catastrophic head injuries.
In addition to charges relating to death by careless driving, Hampton was also charged with perverting the course of justice.
Hampton, 58, who had been banned for drink driving in June 2012, lied to both his wife, and the mechanic who repaired his car after the collision, claiming he knew nothing about the crash.
Helen Williams, a senior road accident solicitor based in Thompsons’ specialist Road Traffic Accident Unit said: “Moped drivers, much like cyclists, are some of the most vulnerable road users in the UK. This tragedy illustrates that vulnerability and why road users should take extra care around bikes.
“Unfortunately in this instance, Jade’s untimely death was caused by careless driving by a road user who should not have been on the road and by Jade being left exposed when he fled the scene.
“Thankfully the police caught up with Brian Hampton but it is a credit to them that they did as it took an investigation of over 1000 vehicles before they found Hampton’s car.”
