Four Thompsons employees are taking part in the once in a lifetime adventure in April next year.

David Burn from Thompsons’ South Shields office, Cathryn Davies and Claire Godsell from the Cardiff office and Richard Burgon from the Leeds office will join representatives from a number of the UK’s trade unions on the trip.

The Cycle for Cuba Challenge is supported by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and all funds will go towards registered charity The Music Fund for Cuba which buys essential items like guitar strings, ballet shoes and paper for music scores for children.

The charity was set up in memory of British musician Kirsty MacColl, who was killed in a scuba diving accident in Mexico in 2000.

During the six day cycle from Sancti Spiritus to Remedios on the Atlantic Coast the team will complete an average 70km a day in temperatures of up to 28 degrees.

The hilly route passes through dramatic scenery and along quiet rural roads and provides opportunities to experience Cuba’s vibrant culture first hand.

Highlights will include Trinidad, Cuba’s best preserved colonial town and Lake Hanabanlla. Once the challenge is completed the group will join more than a million Cubans at a May Day Rally in Revolution Square in Havana.

David Burn said: “This is an exceptionally worthwhile cause for a country facing an international blockade. The money is all going to the Music Fund for Cuba which was established in memory of Kirsty MacColl. Part of the tour involves us personally delivering aid direct to a school for visually impaired children in Havana. Not only is this a good cause but enables me to experience Cuban society from a different perspective.

“I am especially looking forward to attending the May Day Rally in Revolution Square which is attended by over a million Cubans and addressed by Raul Castro. It really will be a once in a lifetime experience.”

Richard Burgon added: “This challenge combines a great opportunity to raise money for equipment for a school for partially sighted children in Cuba as well as a chance to show practical solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban people.”

Each member of the team must fundraise £2,000 for the challenge. More details can be found at www.justgiving.com/davidburn, www.justgiving.com/clairegodsell, www.justgiving.com/cathryndavies1 and www.justgiving.com/richardburgon.
