Reverend Richard Bailey was the Vicar of St John’s Church in Shenstone and St Peter’s Church in Stonnall. He died at St Giles Hospice last year.
Richard became ill as a result of mesothelioma, a deadly asbestos-related disease. Before he died he instructed Thompsons Solicitors to pursue a mesothelioma claim on his behalf.
Richard was keen to support the hospice and shortly before his death, he became the face of their new five year charity strategy and spent his last days in their care.
With the support of the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (DAST) and Thompsons Solicitors, Richard’s family were able to win an asbestos-related claim against a former employer responsible for his occupational exposure.
Richard’s wife, Marilyn said: “Richard felt safe and secure when he was cared for at the hospice, the team offered amazing support and as a family, we knew he couldn’t have been in a better place for his last days.
“He really valued the support he received and would have been delighted to do anything to support the hospice. We based the amount of the claim on what we calculated it would have cost to care for Richard at the hospice and I know he would have been pleased that we were able to give that back.
“We would like to thank Thompsons Solicitors and DAST for all of their support in taking this forward and helping us to help St Giles.”
Neil Baines, specialist asbestos solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors, represented Richard and joined his family to present the cheque to the hospice. He said: “Mesothelioma continues to claims the lives of thousands of innocent individuals every year. Unfortunately, at Thompsons, we see the consequences of asbestos-related diseases all too often and we are dedicated to fighting to help those affected.
“We were proud to work alongside Richard and his family, with the support of DAST, to secure compensation. The money provided a vital donation for St Giles and ensures that Richard’s legacy will live on.”

Asbestos disease diagnosis? Talk to us for advice and support on how to secure compensation.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, we can support you with advice on how to make a claim.
The process will be explained in plain English and with no obligation – our priority is to provide you with the best, expert advice on whether you have a valid case for compensation, and to signpost you to further sources of support.
There are strict time limits applied to making a claim – usually three years from the date of diagnosis. It doesn’t matter if the exposure to asbestos took place – as it often does – decades ago, the three year time limit applies to the date of knowledge of diagnosis or date of death.
