Family appeals for witnesses in the Neath area
The family of a man from Baglan, who died after being diagnosed with asbestos-related lung cancer, is appealing for information from his former colleagues.
Robert Donald Walters, known as Don, died in April 2013, aged 86, having been diagnosed with mesothelioma, an incurable cancer. The Coroner’s inquest into his death has not yet delivered a verdict.
After Don’s death, his son sought legal help and instructed industrial disease specialists, Thompsons Solicitors, to investigate a claim for compensation.
During his working life Don worked at various locations which could have brought him into contact with asbestos. These include the furnace department at Eaglesbush Tinplate Works in Neath from 1942 to 1957, excepting his service during WW2, Cam Gears, also known as George Kent’s in Resolven, from 1957 to 1965, the Albion Steelworks in Briton Ferry from 1965 to 1966 and the Ford Motor Company on Fabian Way, Swansea from 1966 to 1990.
His family is now appealing for anyone who worked at any of Don’s employers during those periods to come forward with information about the use of asbestos.
Don’s son, Robert Walters, said: “Dad fought his mesothelioma and prepared a list of his past employers before he passed away, which is why we know where he worked.
“As a family we now need anyone who worked at the same locations at around the same time to come forward.”
Amanda Jones, from Thompsons Solicitors, said: “Anyone who remembers Don, or worked with him, should not hesitate to make contact so that we can provide answers to his family about how he came to be exposed to asbestos and sadly lose his life due to mesothelioma.”
