Four British military amputees will row across the Atlantic in aid of charity
The first full team of amputees is set to row across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the annual Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge race.
The Row2Recovery team, which includes Thompsons Solicitors' amputation client, Lee Spencer, will start the world’s toughest rowing race on 15 December, departing from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and finishing around six weeks later in Antigua.
The four strong Row2Recovery team includes serving Light Dragoon Lance Corporal Cayle Royce, MBE, former Irish Guardsman Paddy Gallagher, former RAF Flight Sergeant Parachute Jump instructor Nigel Rogoff and serving Royal Marine Colour Sergeant Lee Spencer.
To date, Row2Recovery has raised more than £1,000,000 for several charities, including Help for Heroes.
Thompsons Solicitors’ amputation client and team member, Lee Spencer lost his leg while helping a crashed motorist on the central reservation of the M3 motorway in Surrey.
In an article published on the Row2Recovery team page, Lee commented: “I feel so lucky and deeply privileged to be selected to be part of the team and can’t wait to get started. I’m looking forward to seeing flying sharks and experiencing the relief and achievement of finishing.”
Lisa Gunner, a serious injury solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors who is currently representing Lee, said: “After surviving three tours of Afghanistan, Lee tragically lost his lower leg while helping a seriously injured member of the public who had been involved in a road traffic accident.
“After suffering a life-changing injury, Lee is now taking on this gruelling challenge to not only help his own recovery, but to also support fellow military personnel who have suffered serious injury or sickness.
“We wish Lee and the entire team all the best for their incredible challenge in the coming months and look forward to following their journey.”
