A new mouse has been developed by Samsung which enables users to browse the web and write and edit documents using nothing but their eyes.

The device, known as EYECAN+, does not require the user to wear any special equipment or glasses. Following an initial set up and calibration, the software recognises the user’s individual eye characteristics.

The technology uses 18 commands to perform functions including zoom, copy, paste, drag and drop. It will help people with disabilities, mobility problems or paralysis, who may be unable to use a conventional computer.

Laura Storer, a serious injury solicitor based in Thompsons Solicitors’ Birmingham office said: “Technology is constantly evolving and these advancements can be life changing for those with mobility problems or disabilities.

“We work with hundreds of victims of serious injuries, and in many cases individuals lose their independence and experience isolation. This new device will allow people to regain a small degree of independence by helping them to communicate and interact via a computer; something that so many of us take for granted.

“While this technology will initially only be donated to certain charities, we would hope that it is something that will eventually be available on the open market. We watch technological advances closely so that we can advise our clients of the options available to them, be it to support their rehabilitation or to enhance their lifestyle. We welcome any advances, however big or small, that will help improve the quality of life for people living with a disability.”
