The Wearside group of leading charity Headway – the brain injury association – will hear the good news at its Annual General Meeting this year that Sunderland City Council will continue to fund a Business and Community Development Officer.

The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Robert Heron, will attend the event on Thursday 27 June 2013 to officially announce the council’s continued financial support of the charity. The current Business and Community Development officer is Kim Hunter and her role supporting the charity’s valuable work is set to carry on for at least another year.

Alastair White, the North East Regional Co-ordinator of Headway the Brain Injury Association said: “Kim’s appointment has been a huge success, she has been very proactive. The funding from the Council has allowed the group to meet more regularly and provide a higher level of support.

“We’re delighted that this looks set to continue for the year ahead.”

Alongside its AGM, Headway Wearside will also host a Community Day to bring together brain injury survivors, carers and their families for an afternoon of activities, presentations and therapies.

Funded by the Red Nose Community Cash project, Headway members, non-members, professionals and the local community will be able to join together at the Washington Millennium Centre in Sunderland between 13:00 and 15:30 and find out more about the charity.

Serious injury specialist from Thompsons Solicitors

Paul Brown, a serious injury specialist from Thompsons Solicitors, who will speak at the event said: “The Community Day will be a great opportunity for those with brain injuries to have fun and meet people in similar circumstances. For new-comers, it is a chance to get a taste of the work we do to support survivors and their families all year round.”
“It is common for those with brain injuries and their carers to feel isolated. Headway events are a great way to make friends and realise you are not alone.”

Chair of the Committee, Margaret Ellens, who has dedicated her life to caring for her brain-injured son following a road accident while he was studying in the USA was last year shortlisted as Carer of the Year in the annual awards run by Headway.

Margaret, who has been a volunteer for Headway Wearside for over 5 years, said: “Being involved with the charity is a great way to meet people in similar circumstances and lend support to brain injury survivors and their families.

“I have been caring for Peter since his accident 20 years ago and have found being involved with Headway, and helping other people to adjust to life following a brain injury a great source comfort.”

The day will provide the chance to take part in activities such as Tai chi, card-making, and Reiki, as well as a range of holistic therapy sessions, massage and Mindfullness Meditation.

Those attending will include Councillor Robert Heron and the Mayoress, Mrs Juliana Heron.
