New GPS technology to be trialled on London buses in a bid to drive down serious injuries and deaths
New Intelligent Speed Application (ISA) technology, which limits the top speed of buses, will be trialled on 47 London buses from July 2015.
The ISA technology tracks buses’ positions using GPS signals and then restricts the bus engine depending on the speed limit of the road it is travelling on.
Transport for London (TfL) says the technology will help drivers to focus on potential road hazards instead of closely monitoring their speedometers to ensure they do not break the speed limit. The trial has been welcomed by pedestrian campaigners.
Between 2008 and 2013, more than 1,800 people were killed or seriously injured by London buses.
Melanie Williams, a senior serious injury solicitor based in Thompsons Solicitors’ London office, said: “Having represented victims of road traffic collisions, we know the life-changing effects an accident can have on victims and their families. Any technology that might improve road safety is welcome.
“We are keen to see the impact that trialling this technology has as it could potentially improve safety for all road users in London. However, it needs to be supported with further mandatory safety measures if we are to see an end to the series of deaths on London's roads.”
