Headway Wearside is urging the local community to help support their work
Headway Wearside, a local group of the national brain injury charity Headway UK, is calling for funds to support their work after it was announced that funding for the role of development officer may not stretch beyond July this year.
Headway Wearside provides information, support and social activities to brain injury survivors in Sunderland and surrounding areas and currently employs a business and community development officer, who organises all activities, such as gardening, sport, exercise sessions and musical and artistic workshops. The business and community development officer also makes applications for funding and helps the committee of volunteers to run the charity.
According to the charity, funding for the role is unlikely to stretch beyond July and the charity is calling on local businesses and people living in the Sunderland area to help fund and support the organisation.
Paul Brown, secretary for Headway Wearside, and senior personal injury solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors said: “In the last year alone, over 16,000 people were admitted to North East hospitals with an acquired brain injury. With Sunderland having some of the highest prevalence rates of brain injury in the UK.”
“At Thompsons, we work closely with Headway to ensure our clients are properly supported following a serious brain injury, and as secretary of the Wearside branch, I personally understand how important the charity’s services are in helping brain injury survivors throughout their rehabilitation and beyond.
“The business and community development officer plays a fundamental role in the successful running of Headway Wearside and we urge the local community to support the charity, in whatever way possible, so that Headway Wearside can continue to provide vital services to the many people affected by brain injury in the local area.”
