Figures reveal that the London borough of Westminster saw the highest number of road crashes during 2014 in the capital
An interactive map launched by Transport for London (TfL) has revealed that Westminster saw the highest number of road crashes in 2014 compared with any other London borough.
The interactive map shows that there were 1,597 road traffic collisions in Westminster last year with a total of 25,992 road accident involving personal injury reported within Greater London. That figure marks a 13% increase compared with 2013, but the number of fatal and serious injuries both fell by four and seven percent respectively.
The map allows users to explore different areas of London to learn about the type and frequency of road accidents, and is the first application which allows people to zoom in on specific roads to learn about road traffic accidents there. The map has been created in a bid to improve road safety awareness in the capital.
Melanie Williams, a senior serious injury solicitor based in Thompsons Solicitors’ London office, said: “While this interactive map does help to inform us about patterns in road fatalities and injuries, it is not clear how this will improve road safety in London.
“It is highly concerning that the number of reported collisions in London grew significantly between 2013 and 2014, and while fatalities and serious injuries have fallen, any road death on UK roads is one too many.
“It is time the government and TfL properly invested in road infrastructure improvements and stricter safety measures, especially for dangerous heavy goods vehicles in London, instead of investing funds in fancy maps and apps, that while informative, do not save lives.”
