On Sunday 01 November, the North East will remember victims of car collisions
RoadPeace North East is holding its second annual memorial service for victims of road crashes on Sunday 01 November 2015 at Durham Cathedral.
This year, the service will be attended by MPs Chi Onwurah, Julie Elliot, Andy McDonald and Ian Mearns, who will join with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones in crashes on the road. Senior fire officers, paramedics and police officials from the region are also expected to be in attendance.
A choir from the Ian Ramsey Church of England Academy will be performing as well as the Cleveland Police Community Band.
According to Government statistics, 1,775 people were killed on the UK’s roads in 2014. RoadPeace North East has been campaigning to protect road users in the region for two and half years.
David Robinson, Chairman of RoadPeace North East and a serious injury solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “Every year, hundreds of people die in avoidable car collisions in the North East and across the UK.”
“Friends and families of victims live with their loss every single day. This is a chance for people in the region to come together, reflect and support those who have been affected.” continued David.
“Services to remember those who have been killed or seriously injured on the road will be held worldwide throughout November. Charities and campaign groups will also be reminding road users how dangerous roads can be, and explaining what governments and individuals can do to prevent collisions.
John and Janet Thompson from Belmont, Durham, lost their son Jake four years ago when he was struck by a lorry while using a pedestrian crossing. John said: “Nothing will bring Jake back but we take comfort in the fact that we have this opportunity to remember him and celebrate his life, with other families who understand our pain and loss”.
Janet added: “We’re also heartened by the fact that we are able to continue Jake’s legacy at RoadPeace North East by working with the community and partnering with local emergency services to make our roads safer.”
The service will take place in Durham Cathedral on Sunday 01 November 2015 at 2.00pm. The service is designed for everyone, whether people have a faith or no faith. Everyone is welcome.
