More than 2,000 people are expected to stage a protest in front of Transport for London’s headquarters today in what will be London’s largest ever mass cycle ‘die in’.
Cyclists, drivers and pedestrians will lie down together in front of the organisation’s office on Blackfriars Road from 5pm this evening to highlight the rising number of cyclist deaths on London roads.
Statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT) show that the number of deaths rose by 10% during 2012 to 118, and serious injuries are up by 4% to 3,222 compared to last year’s figures.
Tom Jones, head of policy at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “We deal with far too many cycle accidents, many of which are completely avoidable. There needs to be legislative change. In responding to the recent Transport Committee cycling consultation we set out six recommendations which should be implemented urgently. What is the most fantastic way to get around is getting a bad reputation due to poor road planning and a lack of government will.
"Boris should spend less time having a go at people who aren’t as clever as he thinks he is and more time paying attention to his day job which the deaths on London’s roads and today’s protest clearly shows he is ignoring."
