A female cyclist is in hospital in a critical condition after a collision with a lorry on London’s Old Street
A 53-year-old cyclist has suffered critical injuries after being involved in a collision with a Tesco lorry on London’s Old Street on Sunday afternoon.
The London Ambulance Service was called to the scene and took the woman to a hospital in east London where she is said to be in a critical, but stable, condition and is receiving treatment for severe leg injuries.
The 23-year-old driver of the lorry has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has been released on bail until December while detectives continue their investigation.
There have been eight cyclist death in London this year, seven of which have involved lorries.
Tom Jones, head of policy at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “The number of cyclist injuries and fatalities in London is far too high with HGVs the cause for a large proportion of those accidents.
“Safety improvements to lorries will eventually be mandatory but change is far too slow and for this cyclist too late. There are changes that could be made almost immediately that would make a huge change, but sadly there appears to be no real interest from the Mayor or the government to better accommodate cyclists on the roads of the capital.”
