Work to improve Bristol’s transport links will start next month
Work to radically transform Bristol city centre’s transport links is due to start next month as part of an £8 million improvement scheme.
The plans will involve the introduction of Dutch-style segregated cycle lanes, a pedestrianised zone on the Baldwin Street side of the Cenotaph, a new MetroBus system and new traffic flows in the city centre. The changes should greatly improve cyclist and pedestrian safety in the city centre.
The work will be undertaken in three phases with the revamp set to be completed in March 2017.
Helen Williams, a senior road accident solicitor based in Thompsons Solicitors’ Bristol office, said: “The plans for Bristol’s transport links, especially the introduction of segregated cycle lanes, should dramatically improve road safety in the city centres and are welcome.
“We need more actions like this by local authorities across the UK if we are to make any real impact on the numbers of road users, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists who are seriously injured or killed on UK roads every year. We welcome any measures which help protect road users from being involved in a road traffic collision, but improvements like these in Bristol will remain piecemeal until the government takes the issue more seriously and makes proper funding available.”
