Child Safety Week 2016 asks parents and the wider community to ‘turn off technology for safety’ to help protect children
Child Safety Week 2016, which takes place from 06 – 12 June, is a campaign of awareness raising discussions, activities and events aimed at highlighting the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented.
The annual campaign is organised by the Child Accident Prevention Trust, a leading charity working to tackle the number of children seriously injured, disabled and killed in accidents.
This year’s theme of ‘turn off technology for safety’, asks families to switch off technical devices at certain times of the day, such as the school run, so that full attention is focused on keeping children safe and away from harm.
The Child Accident Prevention Trust argues that accidents can often because of distractions, such as technology, which could be avoided.
Organisations across the UK, including schools, fire and rescue services, hospitals and children’s centres, are supporting this year’s campaign by holding events throughout the week. Members of the public are also encouraged to get involved in the campaign by downloading the 2016 resource pack.
Henrietta Phillips, senior serious injury solicitor at Thompsons Solicitors, said: “Awareness weeks such as this play an integral role in highlighting the risks of child injury to not just parents, but the wider British public.
“At Thompsons, we know that accident prevention doesn’t happen in isolation so encouraging parents and the wider community to be safer to protect our children is something we support.
“Unfortunately, we see all too often the devastating effects of avoidable accidents involving children, so we’re encouraging everyone to get behind Child Safety Week 2016 to take steps to help prevent and stop accidents from happening in the first place.”
