Medical negligence specialist, Madeleine Pinschof, comments on claims that the surgery has left women in severe pain
A Bristol surgeon is being investigated by his NHS Trust after complaints that his methods have left women in severe pain, with a number of his former patients turning to Thompsons Solicitors for legal support.
Surgeon Tony Dixon is being investigated following complaints from women who are suffering debilitating complications after having mesh rectopexy and Stapled Transanal Resection of the Rectum (STARR) operations.
The North Bristol NHS Trust has told the BBC that while the investigations take place, he won’t be able to perform “certain pelvic floor repair procedures” at Southmead Hospital. Mr Dixon has also been “restricted to outpatient follow-up appointments” according to Spire Bristol, where he has also performed operations. The GMC has suspended him from currently doing STARR procedures.
Thompsons Solicitors is urging anyone affected by mesh surgery to get in touch and speak to our medical negligence specialists, whether you are a former patient of Mr Dixon in Bristol or any other surgeon in the UK, so we can advise you on whether you will be able to make a compensation claim for medical negligence.Madeleine Pinschof a senior medical negligence solicitor from Thompsons Solicitors.
Mesh rectopexy is a technique that is used to treat rectal prolapse commonly in women - usually after childbirth.
Several women who have suffered pain after having rectopexy and STARR operations have turned to Thompsons Solicitors for legal advice. The BBC believes that Mr Dixon denies any wrongdoing, however the investigation means he is unable to officially comment.
Madeleine Pinschof, a senior medical negligence solicitor from Thompsons Solicitors’ Bristol office, said: “We are currently investigating several complaints. The common theme among them all is that these women are in worse pain than they were before the surgeries, which included rectopexy and STARR.
“We have already had former patients of Mr Dixon contact us and we believe that there may be many more who are currently suffering in silence as a result of these painful and often irreversible procedures. Similarly, we are in no doubt that the damage caused by these procedures reaches further than the south west.
“Thompsons Solicitors is urging anyone affected by mesh surgery to get in touch and speak to our medical negligence specialists, whether you are a former patient of Mr Dixon in Bristol or any other surgeon in the UK, so we can advise you on whether you will be able to make a compensation claim for medical negligence.”
