Tinnitus Awareness Week 2015: 02 – 08 February
Tinnitus Awareness Week 2015, which takes place between 02 - 08 February, aims to raise awareness of tinnitus while supporting those who suffer from the condition.
A number of events and activities will take place throughout the week, with displays and information stands in a number of hospitals across the UK. More information can be found on the Tinnitus Awareness Week website.
Tinnitus affects around one in ten people in the UK, and there is no real cure. People who are subjected to loud noises over a prolonged period of time are often susceptible to developing tinnitus, making those who work in industries such as maintenance or engineering particularly vulnerable to the condition.
People who suffer with tinnitus tend to suffer from humming, buzzing or ringing noises in their head or ears.
Senior industrial disease solicitor, William Gasson, based in Thompsons Solicitors’ Cardiff office, said: “Tinnitus Awareness Week provides an important opportunity to raise awareness of a disease which affects a relatively high proportion of people in the UK. Noise is a great, and often underestimated, risk in the workplace and the awareness week is key to remind employers of the potential health threats.
“All employers should comply with their legal obligations in respect of health and safety which, in a loud environment, means providing the right protective equipment to safeguard against a preventable condition like tinnitus.”
